One of the cats makes soup in a big pot and gets money for each portion he cooks. At the beginning there is almost nothing in the soup and it is cheap. The point of the game is to improve the soup. To do this you will need to open many different production facilities and eventually you will be able to cook many different soups.
At the beginning you can add vegetables to the dish, which some cat has to grow, peel and chop. Also, productions for other ingredients are opened and there are hundreds of such productions available in the game. At a high level of development, even wizards and alchemists get involved in the production of food.
